The Demon Bridegroom and Other Stories is a series of animated video shorts based on mystical Jewish folk stories from Andrea Dezsö’s native Eastern Europe. Andrea uses the folk tales as the foundation into which she weaves her own thoughts and personal experiences departing from a literal depiction of the tales.

The stories are relocated in time and place, mixing figurative and abstract, concrete and symbolic, while retaining the essential flavor of the Jewish imagination, spirit, and values. These animations reflect elements of Jewish mysticism and humor, in which reality and fantasy intertwine, characters transcend time and space, travel between worlds, and interact with beings from other realms.

The visual content of the videos feature a seamless merging of traditional and experimental animation, with Andrea’s signature techniques including paper-cutting, puppet-making and her unique illustration style.

The Demon Bridegroom was shown at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival in August 2009. Andrea has also exhibited her work at the Museum of Arts and Design and the Lehman College Art Gallery.

Andrea Dezsö was born in Transylvania, Romania, and was adopted and raised from the age of 10 by a Jewish family. Her father was a Holocaust survivor, and although raised non-observant, her interest in Jewish identity deepened and she converted to Judaism in 2003.

She is an award-winning visual artist, writer, and a professor in the Communications Design & Technology Department of Parsons, The New School for Design in New York City. Dezsö holds an MFA in Visual Communication and a BFA in Graphic Design from the Hungarian University of Design. Dezsö has been represented by the Jack Tilton Gallery, and has exhibited her work throughout the USA and Europe, including Art Basel Miami, the New York Armory Show and Flux Factory, and has had solo shows at Lehman College Art Gallery and the Hungarian Cultural Institute in New York.

Dezsö’s work appeared in The New York Times, Esopus, Print Magazine, Blab!, McSweeney’s and the 2006 Publikum Art Calendar. “Community Garden” Dezsö’s large-scale public art mosaic, commissioned by the MTA Arts for Transit is located at the Bedford Park Boulevard subway station on the #4 train.
